Cloud of silence hangs over child trafficking in Haiti

There are over 200 hundreds unregulated border crossings between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Contraband goods flow into Haiti, while migrants head the other way. Among them are countless children, compelled by poverty to seek work on the other side or forced there by traffickers who will sell them into domestic labour, begging or sex work. This story traces the route of one young girl smuggled against her will, raped, then abandoned, both by her kidnappers.. and the law.

Hello. I'm a journalist, radio producer and teacher. I've worked in Latin America and the Caribbean for most of my career. My work has taken me across a minefield, into a gunfight, paddling a dugout canoe and inside the homes of many brave and generous people. I have also produced several major international reporting projects where a large part of my job was recruiting and mentoring local reporters. I love teaching, and besides journalism, I have taught soccer, robotics, anthropology and English.
